All of those matters, but it\u2019s not enough.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Being physically and technically prepared does not guarantee race-day readiness.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Race-day readiness is psychological. It\u2019s the ability to show up with the <em>right<\/em> confidence, determination, intensity, focus, and mindset, regardless of the conditions, the level of the race, or the pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Preparation Trap<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Athletes often confuse preparation with control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They over-prepare in an attempt to eliminate uncertainty:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More inspection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More thinking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More adjustments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"930\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drjimtaylor.com\/4.0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/POC_types_black.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19452\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2.7352701740103798;width:343px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Ironically, this often leads to hesitation, tension, and tentative skiing on race day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What Race-Ready Athletes Do Differently<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They simplify.<\/strong><br>They trust the work they\u2019ve already done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They regulate energy.<\/strong><br>Not too flat. Not over-amped. They know how to raise or settle their intensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They commit early.<\/strong><br>They decide days before the race how they want to ski (e.g., aggressively, \u201cfull gas\u201d), not once they get in the gate. And all their mental preparation goes into creating that mindset leading up to the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-ad2f72ca wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p><strong>They focus on feel, not technique.<\/strong><br>They prioritize feel, rhythm, and flow instead of technical precision. They don\u2019t give style points in ski racing (good thing for Odermatt!). It\u2019s all about going fast. And that comes from trusting your body to do what you\u2019ve trained it to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1245\" height=\"929\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drjimtaylor.com\/4.0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/sync-logo-jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19454\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Athletes like Shiffrin and Rassat don\u2019t try to ski the course on race day \u2014 they let their habits execute what they\u2019ve ingrained in training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Common Race-Day Mental Errors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Overthinking during inspection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chasing \u201cperfect\u201d skiing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comparing to competitors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trying to ski clean instead of fast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changing goals at the start gate (\u201cI really just need to finish\u201d).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are signs of uncertainty, not readiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Building Race-Day Readiness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Race readiness is trainable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Develop consistent a race routine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practice imagery focused on feel and speed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Train intensity in training, so it\u2019s automatic on race day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trust your tactical instincts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Normalize imperfection \u2014 fast runs aren\u2019t flawless<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>At the Finish<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Race-day readiness isn\u2019t about being in control of everything; it\u2019s about letting go of control of everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preparation gets you to the start gate.<br>Readiness gets you down the hill\u2026fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most ski racers think race preparation is about training, equipment, inspection, and warm-up.
