When the fear isn\u2019t present, when the threat \u2013 you \u2013 are not present, they have no inducement for engaging in whatever behavior you were yelling at them for,\u201d adds Taylor, author of\u00a0<em>Your Children Are Listening: Nine Messages They Need to Hear From You.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Taylor says kids don\u2019t hear the message, just the yelling.<\/p>\n<p>And our yelling models to them that screaming is an acceptable way to treat people to get what we want. (I admit I have caught myself yelling at my kids: \u201cStop yelling at your sister! We don\u2019t yell in this family!!\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen parents have a tantrum in response to their kids\u2019 bad behavior, they are reducing themselves to their kids\u2019 age,\u201d says Taylor, who has two young daughters. \u201cYou lose your power by losing control.
